Origin
Okapis are found in northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Having first officially documented by Sir Harry Johnston in 1901, they bear the name Okapia johnstoni.
Before Johnston officially documented the animal, it had been briefly spotted by the native Pygmies, but so rarely and for so quickly that many believed the okapi to be a myth. It was described as the "forest giraffe" by natives and "African unicorn" by foreign sceptics.
